River stability policy areas are located in numerous places along the Waikato River from the southern boundary of the district to Ngaruawahia. The layer identifies areas along the river bank that are considered unstable and potentially subject to erosion. This layer was introduced by way of an Environment Waikato submission (points 108-110) and first featured in the 2006 version of the Proposed District Plan. Submissions raised the following matters: Lowering riverbed levels and riverbank instability along the Waikato and Waipa rivers indicates the need for development setbacks; Amend rules 21.52.1, 25.59.1, 24.46.1 and 22.45.1 building setbacks along the Waikato and Waipa rivers to ensure bank instability is avoided. This is a dataset that was produced through the District Plan submissions process and will not have any known update cycle. Original Source data may possibly be available from Waikato Regional Council.

This relates to land located above shallow underground mines in the Huntly East area where subsidence occurred in around 1977 and where there is still an unconfirmed risk of further subsidence. The boundaries were defined by Coalcorp and the Department of Survey and Land Information and at the time had identified an area of limited risk and an area of higher risk. The area of high risk was derived from the Crown’s Huntly East Land Subsidence Policy 1993–94. The high risk and limited risk areas were combined as one layer in the 2004 DPR. Areas have been identified in Subsidence reports and in accordance with mining activity.
