Abstract
Flood Risk Areas are shown on the planning maps but also apply to any other land that is subject to more than minor flood hazards. Waikato Regional Council information.
Purpose
Flood risk areas have an important function in mitigating the adverse effects of floods by holding water temporarily during and after flood events. This function is lost if these areas are filled in. Equally identifying flood prone areas help planners to address the hazard risk to people and property at the time of building and subdivision development to ensure buildings constructed above flood levels and do not obstruct primary overland flow paths or floodways (not specified in rules but would form part of the risk and mitigation assessment submitted with RC applications where development is proposed in these areas. Relates to the implementation of the District Plan under the Resource Management Act (1991), and may be subject to various limitations and conditions. These features are a spatial representation of the policies and objectives of the Waikato District Plan and indicate where policies, overlays and District Plan rules apply.
